Language points

1. my eldest sister: eldest 仅作定语,表示(家族中)最年长的

2. the second eldest: 第二年长的;类似的用法还有:the third widest; the fourth longest

3. the same as: 词组,表示什么和什么一样的如何;e.g. I am the same age as my wife.

4. both---are---:表示两者都如何;e.g. Both my sisters are nurses.

F: Have you got any brothers or sisters, John?

M: Yes. I've got two sisters and a brother.

F: How old are they?

M: Well, Susan, my elder sister, is twenty-three. Judith, my younger sister is fifteen. George is the youngest. He is only ten.                 

F: How old are you then? M: Nineteen.

Dialogue 2

Fl: Have you got any children? F2: Yes, I've got three boys but no girls.

Fl: And how old are they?

F2: The oldest is eleven. The second oldest is eight. Peter is my youngest son.

He's only five. He's the youngest in my family.

Fl: How old are you, Barbara?

F2: I'm thirty-nine. And what about you, Alice?

Henry is 47 years old. His wife Nancy is of the same age as him. They've got four children ——two boys and two girls. Jack is the oldest son. He's 17. Mary is the youngest. She's only 7. Rosa is 14. Dick is 3 years younger than Rosa.

There are five persons in my family: my grandmother, my parents, my sister and I. My grandmother likes gardening. My father is a doctor and my mother is a teacher. Both my parents are fifty. My sister is a nurse. She's twenty-one. I'm a student. We love each other.

F: He's 87.

M: When did he leave home?

: At three o'clock this afternoon. My 3-year-old grandson was with him.

M: Your 3-year-old grandson? How old are you then?

F: I'm 47 and my husband is 49. Anything wrong?

M: No.

Passage

My name is John. I'm a student. I'm sixteen years old. My younger sister Mary is only nine. She's a primary school pupil. I get up at 6^00 every morning Mary leave home for school at 7^00. Classes begin at 8^00. Mary gets up half an hour later than I. She leaves home at 7'•30, because her classes begin at 8^30.

F: My father is the same age as my mother. They're both 52.

Passage

I'm going to sell my piano. It's about fifty years old. My parents bought it for me twenty years ago when I was eight; I want to sell it for 900 dollars so that I can use the money to buy a violin for my six-year-old daughter. The violin costs 800 dollars.
